President Barack Obama’s 69-year-old Kenyan half-uncle, Onyango Obama, has worked at Conti Liquors in Massachusetts for the past five years.
On Aug. 24, he was pulled over for a traffic stop and subsequently arrested for DUI. Onyango is currently being detained by Immigration and Customs.
Police pulled him over after he allegedly made an illegal turn in front of them at 7 pm. Onyango blew 0.14 on a blood alcohol test (0.08 is the legal limit).
After he was booked on charges of DUI, failure to yield at an intersection and negligent operation, police offered Onyango his obligatory phone call.
“I think I will call the White House,” he said.
Onyango Obama is the President’s father’s half brother and brother of his aunt, Zeituni Onyango.
He’s not the first of President Obama’s Kenyan relatives to get in trouble with the law. Two years ago, just days after the inauguration, his Kenyan half-brother George was arrested for marijuana possession in Nairobi.
