Traditionally law enforcement steps up its efforts during the holiday season. With all of the holiday parties and fêtes taking place, this year is no different.
NewsChannel7 reports that the South Carolina Commission on Prosecution has received $1.2 million in federal grant money for the prosecution and enforcement of those individuals charged with drinking and driving.
They are teaming up with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety to ramp up DUI enforcement this holiday season.
The grant enables each solicitor in the state to hire a prosecutor to focus solely on DUI cases.
According to NewsChannel7:
Highway patrol says DUI arrests are up 72 percent in 2010 at 14,840, since 2006. DUI deaths are also at the lowest rate since 1982 and they hope this effort will make drunken drivers think twice before getting behind the wheel.
In an effort to protect the public, the Department of Public Safety will begin airing the “Sober or Slammer” campaign commercials tonight.
